Eight years ago I took a test. It was a personality test that changed everything.
Up till this point I had spent two decades in financial services and was at a cross roads in my career. I wasn’t satisfied in my work, it was no longer fueling me and I knew I could be doing more.
But I didn’t know where to go or what to do.
On top of that, for a good part of my career I often felt like a square peg trying to fit a round hole. It was as though I’d go to work wearing a trench coat; hiding who I really was and being who I thought I needed to be, to fit in, be accepted and valued.
At the time I believed being different was a detriment.
Until I took a simple, 5-minute test.
This personality test was unlike anything I’ve tried before. It wasn’t based on how I saw myself, rather it shows you how the world sees you, at your best. It’s called How to Fascinate®.
It’s a personality test that measures your personal brand’s most impressive qualities.
My results showed I was a Trendsetter. I’m good at sensing the next big thing and a trailblazer who guides others often in uncharted territories.
It all made sense! Picture a Trendsetter in a bank. Right?!?!
I finally understood why I felt so different. Now different didn’t mean something was wrong with me or my environment. Bank’s do need Trendsetters – they need innovative, breakthrough ideas – right?
What this test helped me identify was not so much what my next career move would be instead, how could I bring more of who I was, in what I was doing already.
“Not until we are lost do we begin to understand ourselves.”
-Henry Davide Thoreau-
I was lost not because I was in the wrong job. I was lost because I wasn’t being me. I was discounting, devaluing and dismissing my value and changing jobs would still not change that. I needed to find and fully bring my strengths, talents and gifts to the table. At which point I’d then be able to make a better decision as to where I’d go next.
Sometimes being lost is a good thing, it helps you look for the thing you most need to find.
There’s a whole lot going on in our world today and you might be feeling lost, confused, disconnected and overwhelmed. You’re not alone and there is light at the end of the tunnel.
If you’re using this time to self reflect, want help to get clear on your value, or have more confidence in your impact, I put together some resources for you that have helped me in my career journey and in developing my personal brand.
